Firefly or Lightening Bug...that is the question!

There are many things that let you know that summer has arrived. The weather is warmer, the days are longer, and the kids are out of school. My favorite sign of summer's arrival is the return of the lightening bug (southern WV speak for Fireflies). The kids were out enjoying the longer days with some friends from our neighborhood. We'd been skating on the road and then the whole gang came to our house to jump on the trampoline and play on our swing set. As everyone was starting to head for home, we noticed them. Little lights that started in the grass and slowly started rising into the air. Josh and Abby were so excited. "Mommy, go get our bug catching jar...we want to catch fireflies!"

They had a great time. In a matter of minutes they had caught more that 30. The simple joys of summer. I remember many nights spent during my childhood in the back yard capturing lightening bugs. After the hunt was over, the fun of keeping the jar next to my bed and watching the lights until I drifted off to sleep. Josh and Abby opted last night to open the bug catching jar and watch the fireflies fly away. It's just as well. I am sure that we'll be out at dusk many a night catching lightening bugs!
